WCW in the 90's

No Jammin' Just Slammin'.

Take yourselves back to 1990. The year when New Kids On The Block was the in-thing for girls, the year when it was aparentley cool for boys to wear neon pink, the year when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was the top show everywhere and the year when WCW was marketed mainly at teenagers rather than multiple age groups.
Sting looking well ard!
In a wrestling federation whether you are heel, face or tweener it's every man and woman for themselves when it comes to battling over a leather and gold championship belt. Behind the curtain and in their spare time these people have hobbies, past times and other part-time careers. One career is the WCW Band. We have Terry Taylor on Keyboards, Sting on vocals, The Steiner Bros on drums, Dustin Rhodes on guitar and Lex Luger smashing the amps. Whether they got anywhere is beyond me and back then anything releasing a single in the charts be it The TMNT, The Simpsons, The cast of Neighbours and the WWF (remember Slam Jam?) would be shit-hot in the charts.

Scott drumming as well as he wrestles.Terry TaylorEl Kabong!

So I came across this historical peice of footage one day when I purchased WCW: Great American Bash 1990 for just £3 in one of Keynsham's many charity shops. This historical PPV event featured Sting's first world title win, Undertaker (as Mean Mark) jobbing to Lex Luger and the debut of Big Van Vader.
Sid, Taker and Heyman
Following from the WCW Band playing their peice we are taken to an advert for WCW Videos presented by Van Hammer and Johnny B Badd. In those days Van Hammer totally rocked and even his lispy voice was pretty cool, as a wrestler he also worked the crowd very well. Johnny B Badd who most people know as Mark Mero (Sable's ex) was an annoying but well liked heel (kinda like Rico). On top of that, Mero/Badd was a good wrestler and I remember him having a very meaty fued with Arn Anderson over the TV Title. Back then it made the TV Title seem worth something before Scott Hall threw it in the trash.

Van Hammer and Johnny B Badd£2 off next purchase

I dunno how much Mero, Hammer and the WCW Band were paid to do that advert but that was totally embarrasing!  See for yourselves and download the clip.
